Late 19th Century
Trade cloth, glass beads, silk edging
From a Western Collection
Overall excellent condition, minor bead loss, minor wear along the edge of the silk border. No restoration. This remarkable breechcloth is empowered with classic Prairie asymmetrical foliate/cosmological devices and with a Christian motif of Christ crucified on a cross. This extraordinary depiction with power lines radiating from the bars of the cross to two large five pointed stars suggests the fusion of Native animistic religious belief with aculturated Christian creed. Stylistically Christ’s outstretched arms mirror the power lines emanating from the bars of the cross to the stars.
