Monumental Stone Bird Head

Monumental Stone Bird Head

Region: Oconomoc, Wisconsin

Circa: Pre-contact

Material: Dense hard stone with patches of dried lichen.

Dimension: L. 13” x W. 11” x H. 9 ¼”

Weight: 45 lbs.

Collection History: Acquired from a Conn. antique dealer who acquired it in the town of Oconomoc, Wisconsin where it had been found on a farm. This was an area of continuous movement and migration in the Great Lakes along the Canadian border.

Condition: Excellent, heavily weathered, no restoration.

Comments: A naturally formed boulder with eye sockets and mouth pecked and abraded for definition. This may have functioned as a boundary marker. The bird head suggests association with Great Lakes avian/thunderbird iconography.
